National Public Radio

I guess everyone must be aware of National Public Radio (NPR). These people broadcast live shows online, a lot of which can be downloaded. Here is a Sleater-Kinney show (there are other great bands too). The venue generally is Washington's 9:30 club.

They're so good - I think it's very sad they broke up.

Also, there's so much good stuff coming out of Canada: you may have heard these already but just in case you haven't; you gotta listen to Godspeed! You Black Emperor and The Organ. As a fellow Indie whore, I thought I'd recommend.

SGITC: Thanks a lot for the recommendations. Good music should always be shared. Spread of indie music is all about word of mouth and yes, Amazon.com (a great place to get reactions from the public and not crits).

No, I have not heard any of the bands you mentioned. Yes, have read about The Organ somewhere.

Antick: Totally agree.

Thanks for dropping by too. I have harsh opinion on MCR's Black Parade video. They're trying to be Queen, too hard, and too soon. They're striving for an epic stature that they will never afford. Grrrr.

It's a pipe dream but I kind of want to start an Indie magazine in India, and convince one of my friends to start an event company that brings these acts out to India.

More goodness: Neutral Milk Hotel. You'll love 'em :).

Come on, you really expected me not to have heard NMH?!!!!

hehe, i see you guys are into indie music too! might I recommend the Magnetic Fields, Voxtrot and My Morning Jacket. good stuff!

I didn't want to be presuptuous! I'm glad you like NMH: I have Holland 1945 on ree-peeet. Haven't seen the link yet, will do so tonight.

I had enough friends at DU and IIT who were either in bands, or friends of people in bands. I can't play anything to save my life, so in a way I admire their committment [what I didn't admire, however, were the PANTERRA BLIND GUARDIAN SEPULTERA t-shirts]. With metal I go as far as Metallica, and even that is pooh-poohed by the oh-so-hardcore kids from school.

There's a good doco, actually, called Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, which I quite liked. See it if you haven't already!

My resolve is suddenly strengthened: I think I'm DEFINITELY starting this magazine. And it can be in Hinglish!

How do you feel about Sigur Ros and Mogwai? I'm obssessed. In Glasgow I went to Mogwai's favourite pub [Nice 'N' Sleazy] and have seen Sigur four times.

That Armchair Philosopher: Magnetic Fields is da bomb. Holiday is my fav. MMj is good too. Have not tried Voxtrot yet.

SGITC: Awesome band both. Sigur Ros four times. Fucking awesome. Live music. That is what we miss in India. The Internet has obliterated all the other boundaries.

hehehe. NMH seriously is awesome. its funny how the best bands seem to be coming in from the british isles or canada. music in the US, for instance, sucks ass.

so hows the indie scene in india anyway? as in, do people majorly listen to indie? AND, are there any bands making waves anytime soon?

@surly - heh, d'you play something too? i had amazing fun being part of a band and doing versions of some awesome indie bands a couple of years ago.. this charming man though, has to be my favorite thing to play (if i can still remember!)

Dntel, LCD soundsystem (awesome album)um

haven't heard the other bands. Les Savy Favs is supposed to be good.

You have to download I Love The Valley OH! by Xiu Xiu - as exultant as some Mogwai stuff, except not very atmospheric, and with words! And Brother - by The Organ.

Okay I'm done :). Sorry, I get a bit manic about music. I'm going to go and do something constructive.

Yeah! It was a marathon discussion.

That Armchair Philosopher:

i have no clue what's the indie scene is like in India. I am sure there must be a lot of people into indie here. it not that bad.

well i am not everyone so thanks da!
and linked you are too.

music in the US sucks ass. forevermore i shall be grateful to my lovely canadian friend and her alphabetically arranged music collection. as far as the british isles go music here's always been more cutting edge than the states but now i am beginning to explore ze franche scene a-wee beet more. works for me, i rarely pick up lyrics and for zomeone who's been a committed zeppie for years clearly lyrics aren't the most motivating factor.

oh, xiu xiu are a brilliant band. and so are les favy sav. check out the cat and the cobra and 3/5

American indie scene is not bad at all guys.

That Armchair Philosopher you like Postal Service(and Death Cab), Magnetic Fields, MMJ, Neutral Milk Hotel, etc they are all American bands mate. Except Magnetic Fields all other bands are from second half of 90s or later.

I could list more good American bands which have come out in 2000s.

no no, what i meant was - the kind of music played by mainstream radio in the US doesnt go past hip hop or punk. or some crappy love songs.

when i asked about the indie scene in India - I'd meant its exposure to the general public on FM channels and such.. not if people in India listened to Indie, which I'm sure they do :)
